Post-Quantum Crypto with PQM4 on Cortex-M4
Overview
On a physical Arm Cortex-M4 board or QEMU, this guide uses pqm4 to build, test and analyze post-quantum cryptography implementations. The workflow runs test vectors, measures CPU cycles, stack usage and code size, and demonstrates integrating a new KEM scheme into pqm4, PQClean and mupq. This MCU-level evaluation baseline lets developers compare reference and Cortex-M4-optimized implementations and examine functionality, performance and memory cost with a consistent method.
Scope of verification
- It is a PQC evaluation reference workflow on a Cortex-M4 or QEMU, validating test vectors, cycle/stack/code-size measurement and the flow for adding a new KEM implementation.
- Dependencies include a pqm4-supported Cortex-M4 board or QEMU, the Arm embedded toolchain, pqm4/PQClean/mupq source, a matching board configuration and reproducible build settings.
- QEMU suits functional validation but cannot represent real-hardware performance or memory behavior; the NewHope example is not a NIST-standardized algorithm, and passing tests does not cover side-channel resistance, secure-implementation review or production cryptographic certification.
