OpenBMC on RD-V3 Virtual Platform

L04 · 15 min · Arm Neoverse RD-V3 Fixed Virtual Platform (FVP)

Overview

On an Arm Neoverse RD-V3 FVP, this guide builds OpenBMC with Yocto/BitBake and boots the BMC and host firmware alongside UEFI. The workflow validates basic boot and communication paths for the management controller and host via multiple UARTs, Serial over LAN and custom IPMI commands. This pre-silicon flow chains OpenBMC, UEFI and an Arm reference platform so firmware integration, debugging and CI validation can start before physical server hardware arrives.

Scope of verification

  • It is a pre-silicon firmware reference workflow on the RD-V3 FVP, validating OpenBMC/UEFI boot, UART, Serial over LAN and selected IPMI interactions.
  • Dependencies include a Linux build host with sufficient CPU/memory/storage, Yocto/BitBake, a matching RD-V3 software manifest, the FVP version and a long-running build environment.
  • Scope centers on boot and management-interface integration on the virtual platform; it does not cover a physical BMC, board power sequencing, full Redfish, silicon behavior, hardware fault handling or production-platform validation.
